Clifford Robert  Olson Jr.            William George Bonin

Opening Remarks:

My conclusion in comparing and contrasting Clifford Robert Olson and William Gregory Bonin is that sometimes criminal behaviour is dispositional (biological or innate) while other instances criminal behaviour is situational.  More often than not, antisocial behaviours is complex continuum of causes.

In examining these two sexual serial killers, I have confirmed that evil is ordinary or banal. Both of these could function in society while carrying out their henious antisocial behaviours.   Furrther to that,  is the body of knowledge that I have gained that will inform my ideas and notions of the origin of criminal behaviour.

What I have found out is that factors that contribute to the commission of crime are multi-faceted, nuanced and extremely complex. Bartol et al. informed me that “the developmental life course of all humans follow a pathway (or trajectory) that may be littered with risk factors.” (Bartol et al., 2011, pp79. Chapter 4: origins of criminal behavior: developmental risk factors). There are common risk factors that contribute to delinquency and/or adult criminal behaviour. Care needs to taken in applying labels to individuals, especially--juviniles.

In the words of the famous psychologist, Phillip G Zimbardo in the works  'The Lucifer Complex':

...We also want to believe that there is something IN some people that drives them toward evil, while there is something different IN others that drives them toward good. It is an obvious notion but there is no hard evidence to support that dispositional view of evil and good. -- Phillip G. Zimbardo --  http://www.lucifereffect.com/heroism.htm

INtroduction

Some definitions to lay the ground work for this investigation.

Pedophilia

Both Olson and Bonin are Pedophiles.   Olson for instance molested a 5 year old just before he got married. Bonin would report being 'horny'and would go hunting for a child victim.

The  word derives from the Greek words "pedeiktos (young children) and philia (love) and generally refers to a sexual preference for children who have not yet begun puberty (Seto 2008).The specific diagnostic criteria for pedophilia in the (DSM-IV-TR) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . (American PsychiatricAssociation 2000: 572)."

The  DSMV-IV-TR criteria to qualify as a pedophile answers these questions in the :

(A) Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually

arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity

with a prepubescent child or chil- dren (generally age 13 years or younger).

(B) The person has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or

fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.

(C) The person is at least age 16 years and at least 5 years older

than the child or children in Criterion A. (Bartol et al., 2011,  Ch. 5 pp. 107)

QUADRIPARTITE MODEL OF SEXUAL AGGRESION AGAINST CHILDREN:

In comparing both Clifford Olson and William Bonin as sexual serial killers,  both had a penchant for killing children  and teenagers.  Hall and Hirschman (1992) applied their quadripartite model to explain sexual offending against children.  What may have fed Bonin and Olson's  preoccupation with children are:

(1) Physiological sexual arousal to children.

(2) Cognitions that justify sexual abuse of children. For instance, the ideation that sexual contact

with children is not harmful or wrong and is enjoyable for victims. (Bartol et al., 2011, pp. 109)

Serial Murder:

Douglas et al, 1986 defines serial murder as follows: "The time interval—sometimes referred to as the cooling-off period—may be days or weeks, but more likely months or years. The murders are premeditated and planned, and the offender usually selects specific victims. The cooling-off period is the main difference between serial murders and other multiple murders."  (Bartol et al., 2011, pp.175).

Mixed Crime Scene:

Show evidence of both organized and disorganized crime behaviour where, a crime might  have stared out carefully planned, but deteriorated into a disorganized scene when things may have deviated from the plan. A  mixed crime scene is likely the most common type. Bartol & Bartol, 2004, suggest that it is more "realistic to assume that crime scenes fall along a continuum, with the organized description at one-pole and, disorganized at the other pole.  Few crime scenes would dominate one pole or the other. (Bartol et al. 2011, pp. 167).
